Challenge
As competition for groundwater intensifies over the next 50 years, supplies are expected to drop by about 1/3 as the population doubles. Unfortunately, the local government entities charged with protecting groundwater — groundwater conservation districts – often lack the funds to educate the public about their roles and responsibilities. The River Systems Institute, which is dedicated to protecting the state’s freshwater resources, asked Laura Raun Public Relations how the districts might educate the public about their roles and responsibilities.
Solution
The institute partnered with Laura Raun Public Relations and the Texas Alliance of Groundwater Districts to develop workshops that would train districts to communicate more effectively with the public. The workshops focused on public information campaigns, including:
- Strategic communications plans
- Developing key messages
- Creating communications tools
Outcome
The workshop was so well received by participants that options were explored for making it available to the entire TAGD membership in other formats, such as DVD.
